Praying for the dead

Question

Some Christian faiths believes that if you pray for the dead the amount of time in Purgatory will be reduced. Again, is this fact or fiction?

Answer

The sole Bible text which Catholics can even remotely refer to in order to back up their belief is Job 1:5: “When a period of feasting [by Job’s sons and daughters] had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking: ‘Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts’. This was Job’s regular custom”. However, the Catholic doctrine is a total fantasy because Job’s children are very much alive, not dead!
